News / Inverness police control room to close in January

THE CLOSURE of the Inverness based police control room has come a step closer after the Scottish Police Authority Board approved the move to Dundee during a meeting on Thursday afternoon.

The controversial closure is likely to be implemented in January next year following consultation with staff.

Communities around the Highlands and Islands have repeatedly expressed its concern as to the loss of vital local knowledge when it comes to responding to emergencies.

Police Scotland said 28 jobs would be retained in Inverness through the creation of a new national database enquiry unit (NDEU) to support operational policing.

Every member of staff affected by the move of the control room to Dundee will be offered a job in the new unit, the police board said.

In addition, 14 police officers currently deployed within the Inverness area control room will return to operational duties in the Highlands and Islands division.

Deputy chief constable Iain Livingstone said: “I want to make an additional commitment today.

“As Police Scotland works through the transformation of our corporate services division and our corporate support roles, we will do everything we can to decentralise these posts from the central belt and bring more jobs to places like Inverness, in addition to the posts we have protected at this time.”
