News / Hjaltland open day

Hjaltland's new development at Nordavatn in Lerwick.

HJALTLAND Housing Association will hold an open day at one of its new developments in Lerwick to highlight the work it is doing to tackle the high demand for properties in the town.

The development of rental flats and house at the Observatory, Nordavatn, will be open to the public between 1pm and 4pm on 21 September to mark the second annual Scottish Housing Day.

The day is supported by a range of organisations and agencies including Scottish Federation of Housing Associations, the Scottish Government and Shelter to raise awareness of housing issues.

The newly-completed Hjaltland development, which is built on the site of the former Met Office building at the south end of Lerwick, features 12 one-bedroom flats, eight two-bedroom houses and one three-bedroom property.

It enjoyed support from the Scottish Government to the tune of £1.9 million and the properties will be advertised in the coming weeks.

The public will be able to go on tours of the properties and meet staff during the open day.

The housing association, meanwhile, is expected to be kept busy after it was confirmed in June that Shetland Islands Council is to be given a “significant increase” in money for affordable housing from the Scottish Government over the next three years.

The local authority will be allocated £14.3 million between now and 2021 and it will work in partnership with Hjaltland.
