SHETLAND enjoyed more sunshine than Cornwall in July – only the eighth time it has happened since records began in 1929.

The isles had 192.9 hours of sunshine, which is 150 per cent of its July average of 128.5 hours.

Shetland was the sunniest place in Scotland over the month and the eighth sunniest in the UK.

Cornwall, at the southern tip of England, had 153.5 hours of sunshine, while the Isle of Man was the sunniest place in the UK with 208.7 hours.

A Met Office spokeswoman said: “We have to look at the pattern of weather systems affecting the UK through the month.

“Often when high pressure was in control, it was positioned to the north or east of the UK, holding back rain and cloud bearing systems from the west and south or making them break up as they approached the far north of the UK, so Shetland’s location has been favourable.”

Tourists were among those who enjoyed the sun in the isles and Hugh Harrop of Shetland Wildlife said its tour clients were very impressed by the weather.

“As a business that pretty much spends most of its time delivering its product outdoors, it has been an incredible month,” he said.

“We often have to make bad weather alternatives anytime in May, June and July, but July has been just one of those months where everything has gone to plan.

“All of our clients from all corners of the world have commented on just how great the weather has been. Let’s face it – Shetland can throw some of the best and the worst weather out there, so that’s what makes the place so unique and so special.”
