News / Sumburgh numbers up
SUMBURGH Airport has enjoyed another rise in passenger numbers thanks to oil and gas industry activity.
A total of 100,623 people travelled through the airport between April and June 2017, which was a 15.1 per cent increase on the previous year.
Sumburgh has seen a continued rise in numbers over the last few years as more oil and gas flights travelled through the airport.
Nine out of Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd’s (HIAL) 11 airports enjoyed a rise in numbers over the last year.
Managing director Inglis Lyon said: “Our regional airports continue to play a key role, enhancing and supporting Scotland’s economy and offering great choice for both business and leisure passengers, particularly during the holiday season.”
Passenger numbers at Sumburgh, meanwhile, could be set to increase further from 1 September when Flybe goes head-to-head with current franchise partner Loganair by offering flights to Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
