News / Nuisance benefits calls
TRADING standards in Shetland are warning people to hang up if they receive an automated call with a recorded message asking if anyone in the household is in receipt of benefits.
Shetland Islands Council’s trading standards team leader David Marsh issued the warning after some islanders reported receiving the calls on Tuesday.
“At the moment we don’t know the real purpose behind these calls, but they are certainly causing a nuisance,” Marsh said. “If you get any automated call asking you to respond by pushing a button on your phone, just hang up.”
- People can report any scam using the online tool at www.actionfraud.police.uk, by phoning 0300 123 2040, or by contacting trading standards on (01595) 744887 or in person at the SIC’s Charlotte House office.
