News / Malakoff to build new ferry

LERWICK engineering company Malakoff has secured a £200,000 contract to build a replacement ferry for a route in the Inner Hebrides.

The company will build the 12-metre long ferry MV Carvoria to replace the existing MV Gylen Lady.

It will be the second vessel to be made in Malakoff Ltd’s new boatbuilding facility in Lerwick, which was opened last month.

The contract was awarded by the Scottish Government-owned Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) and it will see Malakoff hand over the boat in August.

The ferry route connects the small island of Kerrera and the mainland south of Oban at Gallanach.

Malakoff project manager Ryan Stevenson said the company was “delighted” to land the job.

“The contract award shows that our new boatbuilding facility is able to meet the needs of vessel operators within and outside of Shetland,” he said.

“We are looking forward to delivering the MV Carvoria to CMAL and hope that she serves the island well.”

Transport and islands minister Humza Yousaf added that it was “very pleasing to see Shetland shipyard, Malakoff Ltd, win the contract to build this new vessel, helping support the local economy of another important part of our island communities.”
