News / Points & fines for speeding

TWO MEN have been fined and given penalty points after admitting speeding charges in separate incidents on the A970 just outside Lerwick.

A 17 year old from the South Mainland, who can’t be named because he is under the age of 18, admitted driving at 90mph in a 60mph zone at Gulberwick on New Year’s Day.

He was fined £400 and given three penalty points, with the court hearing he had taken the matter “exceptionally seriously” and matured rapidly as a result.

Grant Johnson, 29, of Vadills, Vidlin, also admitted speeding at 79mph in a 60mph zone at Tingwall on 13 February this year.

Lerwick Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday that Johnson had been in a rush as he was late for a meeting and made the mistake of overtaking an unmarked police car. He was fined £200 and given four penalty points.

Meanwhile, a man who admitted driving a vehicle without insurance has been fined £300 and given six penalty points.

Harley Goundry, 27, of Burgh Road, Lerwick, admitted the offence which took place at the town’s South Lochside on 29 March this year.
