News / Whalsay water warning

A NUMBER of residents in Whalsay have been advised not to drink or cook with tap water after a higher than normal level of aluminium was detected in the supply.

The areas affected are Marrister, Brough, Challister and Skaw, and bottled water is being delivered to properties.

Earlier this month Scottish Water confirmed it had finished work on a new £5 million water treatment plant on the island.

But the existing older network and pipes in the affected areas has deteriorated the quality of the newly supplied water, with some locals reporting an unusual taste.

Flushing is now being carried out and a “robust programme” of sampling is underway.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Public health is our main priority at all times and we have robust procedures in place to monitor and analyse water quality.

“We would ask customers to follow the advice that has been issued, while we work to resolve the current problem. We want to apologise to customers for the inconvenience this issue has caused.”

Updates can be found on the Scottish Water website.
