Letters / Well meaning but ineffective

The last time the Liberals formed a government on their own was in 1905, when their leader was Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman.

For the past 67 years Orkney and Shetland have had Liberal MPs in Westminster, where the remains of the Liberal Party are reduced to a well meaning but ineffectual rump, thanks in part to their disastrous alliance with the Tories in 2010-15.

Now we’re asked to believe that our interests in Westminster are best served by returning a Lib Dem whose influence in the next Parliament will be zero.

I think I’d prefer an energetic, able, articulate and knowledgeable local candidate from a party that really has shown itself to be an effective, disciplined opposition to the Tories. Her name is Miriam Brett.
