A TOTAL of 129 competitors and officials will represent Shetland at this year’s Island Games in Gotland.

The isles will be taking part in eleven sports at the games in June and July, with over 130 events set to have Shetland entrants.

There will competitors in archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, men’s football, golf, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, table tennis and triathlon.

At the last games two years ago, Shetland took 125 people to Jersey and enjoyed a medal haul of 23, which was a record for an event located off the isles.

A number of fundraising drives have taken place to enable individuals to take part in the games amid some concern locally that some athletes could be priced out of attending.

Team Shetland is being sponsored by local engineering company Malakoff Limited, while law firm Harper Macleod LLP has also provided financial support. NorthLink Ferries has contributed travel sponsorship for the team.

Shetland Island Games Association chairwoman Karen Woods said plans for this year’s games have been taking place for over one year.

“The Shetland team again includes a mix of youth and experience, and our competitors and coaches will now be working hard on their final preparations for the games,” she said.

“It’s a busy and exciting few weeks ahead and we’re looking forward to seeing Shetland’s competitors perform at their best, alongside talented sportsmen and women from other islands.

“We’re grateful to our team sponsor, local engineering and fabrication contractor Malakoff Limited, for their continued financial support for the team, and to all those who have supported our fundraising efforts.”

The full list of competitors and officials travelling to Gotland can be found here.
