News / Malcolmson appointed SNP convener as Wills joins party
NEWLY elected SNP Shetland convener Iain Malcolmson has welcomed retiring councillor Jonathan Wills into party membership following an election strategy meeting at Islesburgh on Saturday afternoon.
Dr Wills, a former Labour candidate for Westminster and Holyrood and an SNP supporter for the past decade, said he was looking forward to helping with the general election campaign ahead of the 8 June poll.
Robbie McGregor, who will shortly commence his duties as a councillor after being one of only three candidates for the uncontested South Mainland ward, said he was standing down to enable him to give his full attention to his job as a new councillor.
He also stated that he was delighted Malcolmson had been appointed and wished him well in his new position.
McGregor also said the SNP hoped to have news on its candidate for the Northern Isles constituency – where the party finished runner-up to Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael in 2015 – “in the next few days”.
