News / Trust appoints new members

FOUR trustees including Millgaet Media owner Malcolm Younger and chiropractor Geoffrey Hay have been appointed to Shetland Charitable Trust.

Northmavine Community Development Company chairwoman Margaret Roberts is also on board, while councillor-trustee Drew Ratter will return on an appointed basis.

The new trustees, who went through a selection process in March and April, were appointed after the £230m Shetland Charitable Trust voted through controversial new governance arrangements which will reduce the amount of councillors who sit on the board.

Trust chairman Bobby Hunter said the three first-time trustees will “bring fresh energy and experience to the board”.

“Drew has enormous experience of the trust and its business and I am pleased that he is coming back onto the board,” he added.

Lerwick based Younger is the editor of ii Shetland magazine, as well as an experienced photographer. He founded the Callum Younger Reach Fund and has been a retained firefighter for nearly 40 years.

Hay, who grew up in Burra, qualified as a chiropractor in 2006 after previously studying environmental biology at university. He works with the Shetland football team and will be assisting them at this year’s Island Games.

Roberts, from Gluss, has worked in a number of roles for BP at Sullom Voe Oil Terminal, while she is also a member of Sullom Voe Terminal 10th Anniversary Trust. She holds an MA (Hons) in English from the University of Aberdeen.

Ratter is standing down from his role as a councillor, but he is being reappointed to the trust. He is a previous chairman of the charity and is an ex-convener of the Crofters Commission.
