News / Tour operators to sample isles attractions

A NUMBER of international tour operators will visit Shetland in the coming days to sample some of the isles’ top visitor attractions.

Eleven delegates will tour Shetland between 22 and 25 April as part of VisitScotland’s annual expo event, which promotes the country to over 600 tour operators and travel agents.

The group will visit the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse & Visitor Centre, Scalloway Museum & Castle, Shetland Museum and Archives, St Ninian’s Isle and Jarlshof.

Also on the packed itinerary will be a trip to Noss and a walking tour of the North Mainland with Shetland Nature.

Sharing Shetland, which is run by former hotel proprietor Veronica Rocks and aims to promote isles businesses and events on a wider scale, will be representing around a dozen of its Shetland tourism-related clients at the expo in Glasgow on 26 and 27April.

VisitScotland islands manager Steve Mathieson said he hopes the tour operators will be impressed by what’s on offer in Shetland.

“Tourism is more than a holiday experience – it creates jobs, sustains communities and provides a shop window for business activity.

“VisitScotland Expo provides local businesses with a fantastic opportunity to engage with tour operators and suppliers from all over the UK and overseas.

“It is crucial we work together to grow tourism and I am delighted to see such commitment from related businesses in Shetland.”
