News / Cooke puts £2m into Unst and Aith sites
COOKE Aquaculture has spent £2 million on upgrading three of its Shetland sites with new salmon farm equipment.
The company has bought 38 Triton pens from Fusion Marine in Argyll, as well as other equipment such as bird net support wheels, as it invests in its future in the isles.
The majority of pens will be used at Cooke’s sites at Balta Isle and North Sandwick in Unst, while four are also bound for Aith.
The polyethylene pens will be constructed in Cullivoe, Yell by Fusion Marine engineers before being towed to the sites.
Cooke Aquaculture Scotland managing director Colin Blair said the company was pleased to buy from a Scottish business.
“It underlines the importance of salmon farming to Scotland’s economy in supporting jobs in rural communities and sourcing services locally, when possible,” he said.
“The containment equipment offered by Fusion Marine is ideally suited for the demanding environmental conditions found in the Northern Isles.”
Fusion Marine’s Iain Forbes added that the order will “deliver direct economic benefits to Shetland”.
“We are pleased that the pens will be assembled on Shetland, which will provide an additional boost to the islands through the development of local supplier networks,” he said.
“This latest order is testimony to the quality of our equipment and the strong partnership we have established with Cooke.”
