THE 2017 Voar Redd Up will be held next month in what will be its thirtieth year.

Shetland Amenity Trust has announced that the voluntary clean-up event will take place on the weekend of 22 and 23 April.

Environmental improvement project officer Sita Goudie said the Redd Up has removed nearly 1,800 tonnes of bruck from Shetland’s landscape over the last three decades.

Last year saw 4,605 people across Shetland collect over 67 tonnes of rubbish from beaches, coastline and the roadside.

“We look forward to welcoming back existing groups, as well as new volunteers, to this year’s event,” Goudie said.

“It is these volunteers who make the Redd Up the success it is and show just how committed Shetland is to caring for the environment. What is achieved through Da Voar Redd Up is incredible, and we hope 2017 will be as successful as ever.”

This year’s Redd Up has received support from a number of organisations including Shetland Islands Council, Shetland Charitable Trust, BP Sullom Voe, Keep Scotland Beautiful and World Animal Protection.

The amenity trust reminded local groups wanting to take part that they should register annually, even if they do not require a pack, so it can keep tabs on where Redd Ups are taking place.

The trust supplies gloves and bags and takes away the collected bruck.

It is sorted by Augean North Sea Services at its Greenhead base in Lerwick to remove items for recycling before the rest is disposed of at the council’s waste management facility in Gremista.

Those who have not taken part before in Da Voar Redd Up and wish to get involved should contact the trust or visit http://www.shetlandamenity.org/da-voar-redd-up.
