News / Reminder to claim benefits
SHETLAND’S Citizens Advice Bureau is urging islanders to make sure they are not losing out by failing to claim benefits they are entitled to.
Starting on Monday (6 March), the Scottish Government is running a benefits take-up campaign and Shetland CAB manager Karen Eunson said: “The aim of the campaign is to emphasise that the social security system is there for anybody who needs it, and to start reducing stigma around claiming social security.”
Citizens Advice Scotland is offering a free phone number (0800 085 7145) for a two-week period to help citizens understand what they are entitled to and how to claim it. The helpline runs until 17 March.
People can also check their entitlements at Shetland CAB at any time by asking for a benefits check.
Shetland CAB generally helps islanders to claim over £1 million a year cumulatively, and Eunson said the service’s message was quite simple: “Get in touch and find out if you are getting all the help you are entitled to. We can also help you with application forms and appeals.”
