News / Keep safe online
THIS year’s safer internet day is being marked in Shetland with workshops in schools across the isles and the screening of a new short film.
Secondary one pupils in Lerwick’s Anderson High School will take part in sessions with OPEN peer educators today (7 February) to learn more about keeping safe when online.
A short film created by Police Scotland young volunteers and William Tait, which is being shown in all secondary schools, has also been made to highlight issues like cyber bullying.
A new leaflet will also be distributed to parents to encourage them to keep their children safe when using social media.
Chief inspector Lindsay Tulloch, who is also chairman of the Shetland child protection committee, said: “All the agencies in Shetland are aware of situations where children and young people are at risk in their use of social media either through their own activities or because others groom them for sexual purposes.
“We need to support parents, children and young people to use social media safely and to enjoy the benefits that this can bring.”
