News / Athletics club needs your vote
SHOPPERS at Tesco in Lerwick are being encouraged to vote for the Shetland Amateur Athletics Club in the supermarket’s latest Bags of Help funding initiative.
Three outdoor Highlands and Islands projects are nominated to receive £5,000, £2,000 or £1,000, with the group gaining the most votes across the region this month in line to land the top funding.
Shetland Amateur Athletics Club chairwoman Elaine Park said money gained through the scheme would go towards buying equipment to allow the group to keep hosting events.
Also vying for votes in the project, which donates money collected by the 5p plastic bag levy, are Beauly’s Shieling Project and the Groam House Museum in the Black Isle.
“Everyone at the club would like to encourage Tesco shoppers across the Highlands and Islands to support our project and vote for us in store,” Park said.
“If we are successful in getting the most votes, we will be able to purchase essential competition and safety equipment and this will allow us to continue to stage local competition in Shetland.
“This is important not only for our developing athletes but for athletes at all levels as trips to the mainland for competition are often cost prohibitive.”
Shoppers are given a token at the check-out tills which is to be placed into a container near the exit door.
Voting is open until 25 February.
