Letters / A democratic decision
I would like to remind Ian Johnstone (Bile spreading; SN, 22/01/17) that in 2014 Scotland and especially Shetland (by some majority) voted to stay part of the United Kingdom; thereby making Scotland and Shetland part of the UK.
Also the EU referendum was a UK vote, not a regional vote, and the UK voted to leave the EU.
On the ballot paper we were asked “Should the UK remain a member of the EU or leave the EU”, nowhere did it ask should Scotland remain a member of the EU or leave the EU.
If Ian’s argument about the 62 per cent (not 63 per cent) were of any value Shetland who voted a resounding No in June 1975 would have had an argument to stay out of the EU.
But typical of stoic Shetland we accepted the democratic decision of the UK and got on with life, keeping all of our toys in the pram.
