News / Latest comedy night

The Imposters line-up for next week's show.

THE FIRST Shetland Comedy Night of 2017 takes place at the Lerwick Legion next weekend.

The Lerwick Legion is the venue for the show, on Friday 27 January, featuring the isles’ “first and only” improv comedy troupe The Imposters.

They are made up of Alex Garrick-Wright, Thomas Jones, Marjolein Robertson, Paul Samson, Matthew Simpson, Les Sinclair and Ashlea Tulloch. Paul is currently away at university so will not be performing this time.

Organised by the Shetland Comedy group, formed in 2015 by Marjolein – who is set to play some stand-up shows in New Zealand next month – with the aim of promoting local comedy in all forms throughout the isles.

The Imposters sprung form the group and have gone on to perform numerous times since their formation to great acclaim, to audiences never fewer than 90, in both the Lerwick Legion and Islesburgh, as well as last year’s Stand Up Helly Aa which is sadly not taking place this year.

The Imposters work with no scripts, props or pre-planned ideas, taking suggestions from the audience and improvising sketches around them. Nothing is predictable – everything is made up entirely on the spot.

Due to the unpredictability of the show, and the inability to censor performers who are “literally making it up as they go along”, parental discretion is heavily advised and no guarantees can be made that the material will be suitable for under 18s. In fact, guarantees can probably be made that the material will be “wildly unsuitable” for under 18s.

  • Doors open at 7.30pm for a prompt 8pm start. There is no entry fee but donations will be collected on the door.
