News / Another eco award for primary pupils in Cullivoe

CULLIVOE Primary School in Yell has retained its “eco schools flag”, the third time it has been recognised for pupils’ continued commitment towards sustainable environmental projects.

The school previously earned its green flag in 2012 and 2014 and is one of 10 primaries in Shetland to hold the award, administered by the Keep Scotland Beautiful charity.

Pupils have grown produce in a new polytunnel in the school grounds and added a sensory garden.

They have also organised events such as a food day and a “one planet picnic”, and have supported the local Voar Redd Up by helping to clean up Breckon Beach.

In addition they have learned from their partner croft about growing traditional crops and crop varieties that grow best in Shetland’s climate.

Cullivoe head teacher Claire Lawson said the school was delighted and pupils were “very proud of their achievements”.

“Our eco work is really embedded into the school’s curriculum and pupils regularly learn about a variety of environmental issues,” she said.

“A huge thank you must go to our parents and community members who support everything we do in the school.”
