News / Crofting Commission election

LOCALS are being invited to put themselves forward for this year’s Crofting Commission election.

Six board members will be elected on 17 March from regions across Scotland, including Shetland.

Anyone wishing to put themselves forward as a candidate needs to submit their application by Thursday 26 January.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Shetland Islands Council website or by emailing returning.officer@shetland.gov.uk.

Physical papers can be obtained from the council’s corporate services department at Montfield on Lerwick’s Burgh Road.

Voters can also nominate people to stand as a candidate in the election, which takes place every five years. Shetland’s current commissioner is Kathleen Sinclair.

Crofters meanwhile are reminded that their postal votes must be returned by 4.00pm on Thursday 16 March.
