News / Methadone fine / round-up

A MAN from Wester Skeld is £400 lighter after admitting possessing methadone worth around £10 in Lerwick earlier this year.

Darren Gray, of Grindibrek, admitted having the drug on him at Staney Hill on 14 August when he appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the 28 year old was stopped by police and searched, with officers recovering 41ml of the class A substance.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client had a long-standing addiction to drugs and had been on a methadone prescription.

However, Gray was taken off it because he had missed appointments, leading the 28 year old to attempt to source it himself.

Sheriff Philip Mann said while it is “difficult to kick the demon drug”, the law must be adhered to.

The 31 year old said he was driving to work at around 6am on a clear road and didn’t notice his speed.

A 68 year old man from Lancaster has been given four penalty points and a fine of £200 for driving a van at 45mph while in a 30mph zone.

Charles Barton, of Hest Bank Lane, committed the offence on the A970 in Brae on 11 June.
