News / Big support for local foodbank
SHETLAND Foodbank has received a special delivery of 130 trays of food collected by customers of Tesco’s Lerwick store over the weekend.
Helpers from a number of local organisations helped unload the collection at the foodbank in Lerwick’s St Magnus Street on Monday.
Foodbank manager David Grieve expressed his gratitude after hundreds of people supported the neighbourhood food collection.
“Some customers donated whole trolley loads of food but every single can donated is really appreciated,” he said.
“These donations will help people here in Shetland facing a crisis in which they are unable to feed themselves or their families.
“A huge thank you to the staff at Tesco who worked so hard to make the collection so successful.
“This has been a special collection but we need donations of food all year round and these can be made at Tesco, country shops or direct to the foodbank.”
Local Tesco manager Neil Connell added: “It never ceases to amaze me how generous the people of Shetland are.”
Shetland Foodbank is operated by local volunteers and is part of the Trussell Trust, which operates 400 foodbanks across the UK.
