News / Drever wins trad award

ISLES-based singer songwriter Kris Drever has won the best composer award at this year’s MG Trad Awards.

Drever, who is also known for his work as guitarist and singer in acclaimed folk trio LAU, won the category in a year that saw the release of the almost entirely self-penned album If Wishes Were Horses. It has been hugely well-received by fans and critics alike.

The Orcadian-born musician has become a familiar face on the local music scene since moving to Shetland three years ago, most recently performing sold-out shows at Sandwick’s Carnegie Hall and Bixter Hall with his solo project’s backing band.

Drever was not at the award ceremony in Dundee’s Caird Hall on Saturday night as LAU were performing a sell-out show at Edinburgh’s Queens Hall. The group will next year embark on a tour to celebrate their tenth anniversary.
