News / £2m for tidal energy research
TIDAL energy company Nova Innovation has secured almost £2 million of European grant funding towards developing a direct drive tidal turbine.
The Edinburgh-based company deployed “the world’s first fully-operational, commercial, grid-connected offshore tidal array” in Bluemull Sound in the summer.
The cash, from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 SME Instrument programme, will be used to produce a commercial demonstrator of the company’s D2T2 direct drive technology
It promises to deliver lower operating costs, improved reliability and increased energy output.
Nova Innovation director Simon Forrest said: “This will be a major breakthrough for the sector globally – driving down the cost of tidal energy by improving the reliability, efficiency and maintainability of tidal turbines.
“We are looking forward to bringing this innovation to a commercial reality so that it can be exported throughout the world.”
