News / Name a baby orca
THE PUBLIC is getting a chance to name a baby orca that visited Shetland during the summer as part of a larger group.
The isles were doused in orca fever earlier this year when the animals were regularly sighted near land, with locals taking photos and videos from the shoreline.
One pod of orcas often spotted in Shetland has now been seen in Iceland and a local group is calling on the public to help name one of the calves.
Orca Guardians Iceland, a conservation group which promotes the protection of the species and its habitat through research and education, this week asked the public for name suggestions.
People will be able to vote on a shortlist of four names via the group’s Facebook page from 7pm on Thursday.
The group of orcas tend to spend the winter in Snæfellsnes feeding on herring before they head to Shetland – and elsewhere in Scotland – in the spring and summer.
Meanwhile, orcas were spotted again in Shetland on Thursday morning.
Locals saw the whales near Scalloway harbour before they passed south of Burra.
