News / Teen takeover at Hay’s Dock
THIRD year pupils from Sandwick Junior High School are hosting a “teens takeover” hospitality event at Hay’s Dock Café in Lerwick for two evenings this week.
It is the third year of the event, which is part of the pupils’ health and food technology studies and has quickly established itself as one of the highlights of the school year – offering pupils the chance to gain real-life experience of working in a restaurant.
Pupils have worked with staff at Hay’s Dock Café to make decisions about budgets and menus, and completed health and safety training, all of which features as part of their school studies.
Over the course of the two evenings, the pupils will prepare and serve a three-course meal for invited guests, including parents and school staff.
Sandwick Junior High School head teacher Stuart Clubb said: “This positive partnership with Hay’s Dock Café gives our S3 pupils a chance to develop their career-related knowledge and skills.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to explore potential careers in the catering and hospitality industry, which fits really well with the national programme of developing the young workforce in Scotland’s schools.”
