News / Fetlar investment

SCOTTISH and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is set to invest half a million pounds in strengthening Fetlar’s electricity network.

Ahead of the work, the utility company is inviting islanders to an information meeting in the local hall on 16 November between 4 and 7pm.

As part of the investment SSEN plans to replace 109 lightweight wood poles with heavy-duty poles and install additional lightning protection.

SSEN’s Shetland operations manager George Priest said the investment would provide greater protection to the network and improve security of supply for the island’s 80 customers.

“Strengthening the network in Fetlar is expected to deliver significant improvements for many years to come, but we also want to make sure customers have all of the information and support they need while the refurbishment work is ongoing,” he said.

Engineers will use mobile generators to keep the period of disruption to a minimum as they carry out the work to strengthen the network.

The programme is expected to take around four to six weeks to complete in total depending on the weather conditions.
