News / Hair today, gone tomorrow

Hayley Leask's hair is an incredible 45 inches long.

A WOMAN who has spent the last 12 years growing her hair to a length where it almost touches her knees is set to cut it off to raise money for local care homes.

Hayley Leask Leaper has so far raised more than £1,300 for Edward Thomason/Taing House and Montfield Support Services.

After chopping off her locks at the Lounge Bar in Lerwick later this month, possibly on Saturday 19 November, the hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, which provides wigs and hair pieces for children who have gone through cancer treatment.

Hayley said that she had put off chopping her hair because her grandmother liked it so much, and as the years went by, the idea of giving it to charity had been at the forefront of her mind.

“My granny, who passed away last year, was awful fond of long hair and she didn’t want me to cut it,” the social care worker said.

“I thought I would eventually cut it off for the Little Princess Trust, but I never felt able to do so while my granny was here because she loved it so much. But when she passed away, I thought I’d do it shortly, and it’s come time now.”

Hayley’s hair will be styled into a bob by hairdresser Jennifer Murray, with the Lerwick woman expecting to feel like a “whole new person” after the cut.

“I work in social care and I’m very fond of the elderly clients that we support. It’d be fine to raise money for the community,” she said.
