A FILM screening and a glow-in-the-dark exercise class will bring Shetland’s month of promoting positive mental health and wellbeing to a conclusion this Thursday and Friday.
Events have been held throughout October and Thursday will see Mareel host a special screening of ‘The List’, a film of theatre company Stellar Quines’ award-winning Edinburgh Festival Fringe play, alongside the short films produced by local charity Mind Your Head.
‘The List’ tells the story of a woman struggling to adjust to rural life. Increasingly isolated, she keeps life in order through obsessive list-making where remembering to do something or neglecting it becomes the difference between life and death.
Three Mind Your Head short films, which have proved very popular online, will be shown followed by a panel discussion focused on the issues raised by the films.
Friday evening will see Shetland’s first glow-in-the-dark Jazzercise class hosted by Toyah Irvine on behalf of Mind Your Head. She said: “This is a dance class in the dark under UV lighting. We want people to wear white, bright, neon and fluorescent clothing. You are the light on the night.”
The event takes place at the TA building starting at 7pm, but doors will be open from 5.30pm onwards for neon face and body painting, and glow products will be available to purchase. Tickets are available on the door and the bar will be open afterwards, with all proceeds going to Mind Your Head.
Anouska Civico of Mind Your Head said: “It’s going to be a really exciting two days for us. To see our films on the big screen at Mareel is fantastic – all three of the films have been so well received and have by far exceeded our expectations.
“All three of the guys who took part will be participating in the Q&A session afterwards alongside me.

“The Jazzercise event will be a great end to what’s been a very busy month within Shetland and reinforces the real support we have for the charity within the community.
“People like Toyah don’t have to do these events for us but have chosen to, to help raise funds for us. I would like to say a huge thank you to Toyah and Mareel for making this possible.”
