News / Sumburgh numbers fly up
PASSENGER numbers at Sumburgh Airport from April to September were up by over 19,000 from the same period last year.
A total of 189,526 people used the airport – an increase of 11.3 per cent from the 170,245 passengers who travelled between April and September 2015.
Aircraft traffic movements increased by 27% compared to last year, with oil and gas workers accounting for the high figures.
Sumburgh – which is currently undergoing a £6.5 million refurbishment – was the second most used airport in the Highlands and Islands region, with only Inverness having more visitors (456,778).
Across Highlands and Islands Airports Limited’s (HIAL) portfolio, there was a 14 per cent increase in passenger numbers compared to last year.
HIAL managing director Inglis Lyon commented: “What these figures illustrate above all is the vital role our airports play in the future sustainability and prosperity the communities we serve.
“We continue to invest in our facilities and to make improvements that benefit our passengers and the aircraft companies that serve them.”
