News / Man jailed for failing to tell police current address

A MAN who failed to notify police of his current address as required by the Sexual Offences Act has been jailed for three months.

Jamie Dyke, of no fixed abode, committed the offence at Lerwick Police Station between 6 and 12 October.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the 21 year old, who appeared from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday, had to sign into a police station every seven days.

This was related to a sentence he received on the UK mainland in June.

Defence agent Gregor Kelly said his client had come to Shetland to find work. His brother and sister also lived on the isles, but they couldn’t offer him a place to stay.

Dyke was living rough as a result and had intended to notify the authorities once he had secured a tenancy, Kelly said.

Jailing the 21 year old, Sheriff Philip Mann said suspended sentences previously given to Dyke in England had failed to encourage him to “see the light”.
