News / Heroin supplier accepts jail term is inevitable

A FORTY three year old man is “under no illusion” that he is facing a jail term after admitting to dealing heroin over a 10-day period in Lerwick last November.

Appearing via vide link at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Tuesday afternoon, Ian Smith, of Higher Polsham Road, Paington, Devon, pleaded guilty to supplying the class A substance between 8 and 18 November 2015 at Islesburgh House, an address at Ladies Drive and elsewhere.

Defence agent Liam McAllister said his client, who has been remanded in custody since late August, accepted a jail sentence was the only possible outcome.

Sheriff Philip Mann deferred sentence until 9 November for a personal appearance and ordered a criminal justice social inquiry report.

Even though prison is “inevitable” in this case, the report was mandatory as Smith has never been given a jail term before, the sheriff said.

Smith will remain in custody in the meantime and Sheriff Mann advised him to “cooperate fully” with the social workers who will have to prepare the report.
