News / Water works upgrade

SCOTTISH Water has announced plans to undertake a £4m maintenance programme throughout Shetland that will take place over the next few years.

The company said on Friday that it will carry out essential mains replacement to ensure a “fresh water supply long into the future”.

The programme, carried out by Caledonian Water Alliance, will kick off at Lerwick’s Gressy Loan next week (13 October) before progressing through to Knab Road and then the junction of Twageos Road.

On 3 November, work will start at Kantersted Road before moving to Lower Sound and Seafield.

Both pieces of work are expected to last six weeks. Contractors may need to turn off water supply for some customers, but they will be notified at least 48 hours in advance.

Road works with temporary traffic lights are expected, as are access and parking restrictions.

Locals have also been warned that there will be some construction traffic and noise, with some work expected to take place during the night.

Details of work due to be carried out in Shetland in the months ahead are due to be released at a later date.

Ruaridh MacGregor, Scottish Water regional communities manager for Shetland, said: “This essential work is being done to make sure customers can continue to enjoy clean fresh drinking water, and to minimise the chance of bursts in the future.

“The objective for Scottish Water throughout these works is to minimise the impact on our customers and we would like to thank them in advance for their patience throughout the coming weeks.”
