JUST as Shetland Wool Week goes from strength to strength, another popular event, on next month, reports it’s also doubling in size.

On Monday, the organisers of the Shetland Food Fair said that thanks to a raft of new sponsors the local foodie event would be the best and largest ever.

Held in the Clickimin centre from 28 to 30 October, the event will again celebrate all that’s great about locally-produced food and drink.

Returning sponsors Serco NorthLink and Shetland Transport are joined by:

  • Sumburgh airport (HIAL);
  • Facilities management company Shetland FM;
  • Morrison Construction, the company that builds the Anderson High School;
  • Seafood Shetland;
  • Scottish Salmon Shetland;
  • Cooke Aquaculture Scotland.

Owner of Shetland FM, Frank Strang said: “We joined the ranks of the producers two years ago with the Shetland Distillery Company, whose gins and whiskies are winning global renown.

“These strands meant it was natural for us to support the Shetland Food Fair and we hope as many people as possible will attend to savour some of the islands’ fantastic food and drink.”

Managing director of Cooke Aquaculture Scotland, Colin Blair, added: “As a company at the forefront of high quality salmon production in the northern-most farming region in the UK, we wanted to contribute actively to this important event for Shetland.

“The Shetland Food Fair plays a vital role in the promotion of all that’s great about Shetland food and drink – and, most importantly, the companies behind the products.”

Chair of the Shetland Food & Drink Association, Marian Armitage, said the “scaling up” of the event would not have been possible without the support from new sponsors.

“Not only is the sponsorship support of these Shetland companies invaluable to help us grow the fair, we are delighted to be working with them more closely than ever before,” she said.

“It’s fantastic to see just how much interest there is in locally-produced food and drink. Shetland businesses want to help the sector grow and help promote it.

“Through increasingly close dialogue, we also hope we will be able to help producers sell more locally-produced food and drink directly to, and through, Shetland companies.”

Shetland Food Fair opens at 7pm on Friday 28 October featuring entertainment, special guests and a range of special offers for the event’s first customers.

Doors are also open on Saturday between 11am and 6pm, and Sunday 30 October, between 11am and 5pm.

Admission to the Food Fair will be £2 per adult with weekend passes available from Scoop Wholefoods, priced £3.50, or on the door.
