A FORMER NAFC Marine Centre cadet has been given an “outstanding achievement” award after completing an honours degree in Middlesex.
Glenn Tonner, from Yell, joined the NAFC’s merchant navy cadet programme at the age of 16 back in 2005, completing the course three years later.
He is now serving as a chief officer on the Isle of Inishmore, which sails across the Irish Sea between Pembroke and Rosslare, and was recently awarded a bachelor of science honours degree in professional practice in marine insurance and accident investigation by Middlesex University.
His work was further recognised by an award from the university and the Marine Society for outstanding achievement with his final year dissertation.
NAFC student support officer Caroline Hepburn said she was “delighted to hear about Glenn’s fantastic achievements”, which gave a “splendid example of the potential opportunities available to those who pursue a career at sea”.
The NAFC’s cadet programme trains deck and engineer officers for the Merchant Navy through periods studying at the college alternated with periods of service at sea on merchant ships.
Earlier this month 22 new cadets started on the programme, joining 21 cadets who are returning for their second year. A further 20 cadets are currently working on ships before returning to the centre to complete their studies.
