News / Let’s Go Lerwick
NHS Shetland, the SIC and town centre group Living Lerwick have teamed up to mark the European Mobility Week, which kicks off on Friday with a wide range of local events.
The annual campaign aims to encourage local authorities in Europe to introduce and promote sustainable transport measures and to invite local people to consider not using their cars.
A car free event is planned for next Thursday when a 20 per cent discount on public transport is offered through the ZetTrans/SIC travel card.
Other Let’s Go Lerwick events planned for the next seven days are:
- Russell Gair will be hosting a running for beginners open evening on Tuesday 20 September at the Clickimin running track from 5.45pm, everyone welcome;
- free adult cycle training is on offer at the Sound School car park on Saturday between 10am and 12 noon;
- free adult bike check and maintenance up to the value of £20 is available at the Shetland Bike Project on Saturday 17 and 24 September from 10am to noon;
- throughout the week, customers of Lerwick town centre businesses have the opportunity to enter a free prize draw for the chance to win a physical activity wristband tracker;
- ten mini Vikings will be located around Lerwick to encourage people to be active, get out and walk and explore until they find them;
- NHS Shetland will be leading walking groups around the South End of Lerwick, starting from the Market Cross on Tuesday at 12.30 and on Thursday at 5.30pm. The walks will last no more than an hour.
Active schools manager with the SIC, James Johnston, said: “We hope that this event encourages people to become more active in their daily lives and look for more active and sustainable modes of travel to and from work and during the working day.”
