News / Mining history lecture
A LECTURE exploring the “truths and untruths” surrounding Shetland’s mining history will be held in Lerwick later this month.
Researcher Tim Senften’s talk, entitled Big expectations – big disappointments! An introduction to 200 years of mining history in Shetland, will be held at Shetland Museum and Archives on 22 September.
He will detail the mining efforts of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries as locals scoured for valuable minerals.
His research, carried out over “several years”, will explore archival material and draw upon fieldwork.
Senften has a long history of studying old mines in northern Sweden.
In that work, the researcher detailed over 500 mine-related remnants in the area and presented his studies at a number of universities and museums.
- Tickets for the lecture are priced at £3.50 and are available from the museum reception or www.thelittleboxoffice.com/smaa.
