News / ‘Shetland On Page and On Screen’ with Ann Cleeves

Ann Cleeves' seventh Shetland crime novel, 'Cold Earth', will be launched this autumn.

AUTHOR Ann Cleeves, whose novels were brought to life in the BBC’s drama series Shetland, will be joined by a forensic pathology professor and the isles’ own “Mr Fix-It” Davie Gardner for an evening’s entertainment at Mareel this autumn.

The event, on Saturday 1 October, will see Cleeves, Garder and Aberdeen University professor Dr James Grieve screen clips from the series and discuss the fact and fiction of Shetland. It has been organised to celebrate the launch of Cleeves’ new crime novel Cold Earth.

It again features the enigmatic Jimmy Perez, brought to life on the BBC One series by Douglas Henshall, as he struggles to uncover a dark secret buried in the islands. Cold Earth is Cleeves’ seventh Shetland novel.

“The tide of earth had deposited debris, thrown it up on its way through the croft. Perez saw a bed head, a couple of plastic garden chairs that must have been stored in the lean-to. And something else, bright against the grey wall and the black soil. A splash of red. Brighter than blood.”

Cleeves’ novels were used as the source material for the first two series of Shetland, and her characters were used as the inspiration for last year’s third season.

A fourth series has been commissioned and filming is expected to begin in 2017.

Cleeves has now sold over 1.5 million books worldwide and is viewed as one of Britain’s most successful crime novelists.

  • ‘Shetland On Page and Screen with Ann Cleeves’ will take place at Mareel on Saturday 1 October at 8pm. Tickets go on sale from Shetland Box Office on Friday (9 September).
