News / Developing Shetland’s local sports communities
SPORTS clubs and coaches are being invited come together across Shetland in a series of meetings in September designed to develop sport in communities in the isles.
A total of seven meetings will be held under the Community Sports Hubs banner, which is a programme initiated by sportscotland to bring together local representatives and pool information.
The overall hope of the project is to increase the number of people participating in sport and physical activity.
The meetings in Shetland aim to develop activities in regions across the isles and create a “welcoming, safe and fun environment” for sport.
Councillor George Smith, who is the chairman of the Shetland Sporting Partnership, encouraged people to get involved.
“Sport in Shetland will be stronger if we can share information and work together to understand what communities really need,” he said.
“These meetings are aimed at bringing together key players including coaches, volunteers, club leaders, active schools co-ordinators and facility providers to talk about the future of Shetland sport.”
The meetings will take place at 6pm at the venues below:
- Unst – Unst Leisure Centre – Tuesday 6 September
- West Mainland – West Mainland Leisure Centre – Thursday 8 September
- Yell – Yell Leisure Centre – Tuesday 13 September
- North Mainland – North Mainland Leisure Centre – Thursday 15 September
- Whalsay – Whalsay Leisure Centre – Tuesday 20 September
- South Mainland – Sandwick JH School – Thursday 22 September
