News / Two power failures

HUNDREDS of households in Shetland lost electricity on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning in two separate power cuts.

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) said the first took place at around 6.45pm, with a number of customers across the isles affected.

Properties in a variety of areas including Yell, Fetlar, North Roe, Wester Skeld, Brae, Whalsay, Gott, Sandness and Whiteness lost power.

SSE said electricity was restored for most customers within the hour, with investigations now underway into the cause, though some residents said they went without power for closer to two-and-a-half hours.

At 1am on Wednesday morning, supplies were cut to 220 customers in Bridge End, Burra for 18 minutes to allow for emergency repairs to be carried out.

SSE apologised for any inconvenience caused.
