News / Baton relay flies north
A BATON travelling across the UK in celebration of the Air Training Corps’ 75th anniversary stopped off in Shetland earlier this week.
Highland wing commander Christine Copsey brought the baton to the isles on Wednesday to visit the local Royal Air Forces Association branch in Lerwick.
After a whistle-stop visit, Copsey and the baton then headed back south on a Loganair Saab 340 before touching down in Inverness and Stornoway.
The torch relay, which started at John O’Groats on Tuesday, will finish at Land’s End in August.
The Air Training Corps was established in 1941 to give young men the chance to undertake part-time air training ahead of a possible stint with the Royal Air Force.
Today the organisation has 34,000 male and female cadets spread over nearly 1,000 squadrons across the UK.
