PASSENGER numbers at Sumburgh Airport for the second quarter of 2016 were up by over 12 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Operator HIAL confirmed that 87,458 people passed through the airport’s doors between April and June.

Over the same period in 2015 a total of 77,954 passengers used the airport, making for an increase of 12.1 per cent.

Much of the rise resulted from increased oil industry activity, which helped to bring 5,971 more passengers to Sumburgh in June alone compared to the same month last year.

In contrast, Sumburgh experienced a downturn of over five per cent between January and March this year.

Across HIAL’s 11 airports, 36,225 more people travelled in the second quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2015.
