Letters / Public needs to act

The clear goal of those in control of Shetland Charitable Trust has been to have Shetland’s oil money “looked after” by unaccountable appointed trustees.

With councillors deciding, quite rightly, to reject the trust’s “reform” plan and step back from the trust altogether (No more SIC councillors on charitable trust; SN, 29/06/16), it is now vitally important that the public act to secure their control of Shetland’s oil money.

Those who control the trust may now propose a limited experiment with a handful of democratically elected trustees, but few folk of caliber will sign up for such a controlled experiment.

Democracy for Shetland’s Charitable Trust’s online petition, which calls for all trustees to be directly elected by the people of Shetland, can now be signed in the good old way, on paper, at the Tagon Stores in Voe, Westside Pine in Lerwick, Andrew Halcrow’s in Hamnavoe and Robinson and Morrisons in Weisdale. Their support is much appreciated.

Hopefully other businesses across the isles will also help Shetland to regain control of Shetland’s oil money by printing off the paper petition from the “How else can I help” section of our website at www.democracy4sct.com

Currently the online petition, available through the website, has 155 signatories. Whilst that is more than ten per trustee a lot more signatures will be needed if Shetland Charitable Trust is to pay attention to the views of its beneficiaries.

On behalf of Democracy for Shetland’s Charitable Trust,
Peter Hamilton
