News / Port welcomes largest cruise liner ever
THE LARGEST cruise ship yet to enter Lerwick harbour has anchored in Bressay Sound for a 10-hour visit of the islands.
The arrival of the 115,055 gross tonne Azura marks the first of several milestones for the harbour.
In six weeks’ time the port hopes to welcome an even larger cruise liner, the 122,210 gross tonne Celebrity Silhouette, as part of a record breaking summer season that will see the arrival of 79 cruise ships.
Lerwick Port Authority’s Victor Sandison said: “The visit of Azura will be a highlight of a fantastic summer which is demonstrating the popularity of Lerwick as a port-of-call and of Shetland’s many visitor attractions.”
The 290 metre long Azura with 3,100 passengers on board arrived at Lerwick harbour from Akureyri, in Iceland, on Thursday morning and will leave for Orkney at 6pm.
