News / Muckle Roe chapel award
THE RENOVATION of the small chapel on the isle of Muckle Roe in Shetland has won an award for local firm Richard Gibson Architects.
On Thursday The Saltire Society announced it had been given a housing design award in the ‘alterations, renovation and extensions’ category.
At the society’s 79th awards ceremony in Edinburgh, the chapel’s renovation and extension was described as “sympathetic”.
The work involved increasing the floor area and creating “a contemporary and simplistic living space with light airy spaces and breath-taking views of the sea and landscape“.
The judges commented that the new look Muckle Roe chapel “balances stunning views from its living areas with enclosure and warmth to bedrooms” and praised its “high quality design and construction”.
The judges also commended the design’s “respect for its previous use and its re-lationship to the existing community”.
Richard Gibson Architects have produced a short video of the renovation, which can be seen here.
