The King Challenger.

THE CREW member of the Ballantrae-registered fishing boat King Challenger who fell overboard on Thursday morning off Shetland has died in hospital, police have confirmed.

Shetland Coastguard was alerted to the incident southwest of Scalloway at 9.50am and immediately tasked its search and rescue helicopter.

The man arrived at the Clickimin landing site, in Lerwick, and was taken to the Gilbert Bain Hospital at around 10.30am on Thursday.

A police spokeswoman said that next of kin “outside the Highlands and Islands area” were being informed.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has launched an investigation into the incident.

The King Challenger is a 21metre scalloper belonging to Kirkcudbright-based West Coast Sea Products.
