News / Voting in EU referendum under way
POLLING stations in Shetland are now open in the historic EU referendum, which will see UK voters decide whether to remain a member of the European Union or to leave.
A total of 17,375 voters in the isles are eligible to cast their vote.
There are 34 polling stations in 28 polling places across Shetland with voters in the outer isles having all signed up to be postal voters.
Almost 3,000 islanders have opted for a postal vote, of which 54.7 per cent had been returned by Monday.
There is time to return postal votes until polling stations close at 10pm.
Counting local votes will get under way at Clickimin Leisure Complex immediately after polling stations close, with a result for Shetland expected between 2 and 2.30am on Friday.
Shetland News will be at the count and will bring you the local result as soon as it becomes available.
