News / Classic car show success
THE ORGANISERS of the 2016 Shetland Classic Motor Show have declared the bi-annual event another “outstanding success”.
More than 4,100 people visited the event at the Clickimin Leisure Centre last weekend to enjoy cars, motorcycles, commercials, bicycles, engines and models.
In addition to local exhibitors, around 350 visitors from outside Shetland, including motor clubs from Denmark and Germany, brought 172 classic vehicles to the isles.
An especially interesting vehicle returning to the islands after many years was the 1930 drophead Rolls Royce 20/25, which was well known in the islands when it belonged to a Mr Winton of Kergord.
This car was used to convey the Queen when she visited the islands in 1960, and was making its first visit to Shetland in some 54 years.
Organising committee member Maurice Mullay said this year’s display of exhibits had been “truly impressive”.
“The diversity and range of outstanding vehicles is quite amazing,” he said. “This is now a major show in the Shetland and Scottish calendars of events.
“Every square foot of space at Clickimin Centre was filled to capacity this weekend with a fascinating display for visitors to admire.
“The diverse world of motoring was brought to Shetland’s doorstep – and was enthusiastically received by locals and the hundreds of visitors to Britain’s top classic show. The next event is scheduled for 2 and 3 June 2018.”
